CHAPTER 14: THE GRAVE ROBBER

Victoria looked directly into the hidden camera.
âI know youâre watching, Adrian.â
Behind her, the stone coffin of Adrianâs father had been opened.
âI tried to protect you from this,â she continued. âBut you always preferred dead women and impossible children to the people standing beside you.â
Adrianâs jaw tightened.
Victoria held up the silver key.
âSebastian wants this. Daniel wants the boy. Elena wants revenge. None of them care whether you survive.â
âTrace the signal,â Adrian told Mason.
âIâm trying.â
Victoria stepped closer to the camera.
âThere is still a way out. Bring Eli to the old Vale hospital before sunrise.â
Emma shook her head.
âItâs a trap.â
âOf course it is,â Adrian said.
Victoria smiled on the screen.
âIf you refuse, every medical implant created by Vale Industries will receive the same signal as yours.â
Adrian felt cold.
Millions of people relied on pacemakers, nerve stimulators and spinal devices produced by his company.
âShe can control them?â Mason asked.
Emma whispered, âSebastian can.â
Victoria placed the key inside a small metal box.
âSunrise, Adrian.â
The feed ended.
Mason finally located the transmission.
âSaint Gabriel Cemetery.â
Adrian grabbed his cane.
Emma blocked his path.
âYou can barely walk.â
âI donât need to walk far.â
âYou canât trust Victoria.â
âI donât.â
âThen what are you planning?â
Adrian looked toward Eli.
âFor twelve years, they believed a wheelchair made me harmless.â
At the cemetery, Victoria was waiting alone inside the mausoleum.
Adrian entered using the wheelchair.
She laughed bitterly.
âYou decided to remain realistic.â
Adrian placed his hands on the wheels.
Then he stood.
Victoriaâs face changed.
He took three steps toward her.
âYou should have checked whether the cage was still locked.â
Mason emerged behind her and took the metal box.
Victoria did not resist.
She looked almost relieved.
âOpen it,â she said.
Inside was the silver key.
And a folded medical report.
Adrian read the first page.
The report contained a DNA analysis completed nine years earlier.
ELI CARTER: PATERNAL GRANDFATHERâADRIAN VALE.
Adrian looked up.
Victoria whispered, âThat isnât the part you should fear.â
She turned the page.
