CHAPTER 13 — THE FALSE CHOICE

Emily stared at the command terminal.

Five minutes.

Thousands of supposed witnesses.

A system built on lies.

Daniel stood beside her.

“What do you believe?”

Emily looked at the screen.

Not what do you fear?

Not what do they want?

What do you believe?

It was the first real choice anyone had given her in years.

“I believe Douglas.”

Mara looked surprised.

“He betrayed you.”

“He also saved me.”

“He worked for Charles.”

“And then he turned against him.”

Rebecca studied the witness list.

“Douglas spent years inside the Whitmore network. He may recognize the database.”

Mara accessed the code.

Her fingers moved rapidly over the controls.

“The location files are too clean.”

“What does that mean?” Daniel asked.

“No outdated addresses. No incomplete records. No human errors.”

Emily understood.

“They were created for us.”

Mara nodded.

“The witness list is fake.”

Evelyn had manufactured the crisis to force Emily into transferring authority.

The real danger was the termination of Cross Seven itself.

Anna approached the main terminal.

“Let it die.”

Rebecca looked at her sister.

“There may be innocent people depending on it.”

“The system imprisoned us, stole our children, purchased officials, and created men like Charles.”

Anna’s voice shook.

“Anything good it protected was used to excuse something unforgivable.”

The timer reached three minutes.

Mara found another command pathway.

“I can separate the protected identities from the operational network.”

“Can you save them?” Emily asked.

“I can encrypt them into a public-interest trust.”

Daniel frowned.

“Public?”

“The files would be held by multiple independent courts and journalists. No single family, agency, or official could control them.”

Rebecca looked at the Omega Ledger.

“And the evidence?”

“Released in stages. Verified before publication.”

Anna smiled faintly.

“That was what the covenant was always supposed to do.”

The screen requested final authorization.

Emily placed her hand on the scanner.

A message appeared.

TRANSFER AUTHORITY TO SUBJECT B?

Mara stepped beside her.

“No.”

Emily selected a different option.

DISSOLVE AUTHORITY.

The computer requested four bloodline confirmations.

Anna pressed the first scanner.

Rebecca pressed the second.

Mara placed her hand on the third.

Emily activated the final one.

The timer stopped at eleven seconds.

For one breathless moment, nothing happened.

Then the entire network began restructuring.

Safe-house identities moved into sealed judicial archives.

Financial records separated from operational files.

Evidence packages uploaded to dozens of independent servers.

The Whitmore accounts froze.

Emergency arrest warrants generated automatically.

Every compromised official named in the verified sections received a preservation order.

Evelyn’s voice screamed through the speakers.

“What have you done?”

Emily looked into the camera.

“I ended the family business.”

The platform shook.

An explosion struck the upper level.

Evelyn had activated the facility’s destruction system.

Mara opened the elevator controls.

“They’re locked.”

Daniel looked toward the maintenance ladder.

“Other exit?”

Anna pointed to an old torpedo tube beneath the command floor.

“It opens to the ocean.”

Rebecca stared at her.

“You expect us to swim?”

“We have less than two minutes.”

The ceiling cracked.

Water began pouring into the room.

Daniel opened the torpedo hatch.

Beyond it was black seawater.

Mara removed an emergency breathing unit from the wall.

Only three masks remained.

Five people.

Daniel gave one to Anna.

One to Emily.

One to Rebecca.

Mara looked at him.

“You take it.”

“No.”

“You’re injured.”

“So are you.”

Rebecca grabbed Daniel’s face.

“We share.”

A second explosion tore through the platform.

The command room tilted.

Water rushed across the floor.

One by one, they entered the torpedo tube.

Anna first.

Then Emily.

Then Mara.

Rebecca and Daniel entered together.

The outer hatch opened.

The ocean swallowed them.

Daniel could see nothing.

He held Rebecca with one arm and followed the faint emergency light attached to Mara’s suit.

The current pulled them apart.

Daniel caught Rebecca’s wrist.

Above, the platform exploded.

A shock wave ripped through the water.

Daniel lost his grip.

Rebecca vanished into the darkness.

He turned desperately.

No sign of her.

His lungs burned.

Someone grabbed his jacket.

Mara pulled him toward the surface.

They emerged among flames and wreckage.

Emily was helping Anna onto a piece of floating steel.

Evelyn’s boat was leaving the platform.

Chief Reed was aboard.

Rebecca was not.

“Mom!” Emily screamed.

Daniel searched the water.

Nothing.

The platform sank beneath the surface.

Mara looked toward Evelyn’s boat.

Through the smoke, Daniel saw a second figure standing beside Evelyn.

Charles Whitmore.

May you like

Alive.

He was holding Rebecca at gunpoint.
