CHAPTER 27 MARA’S FIRST LIE

Daniel did not speak to Mara during the drive.

Emily sat between them inside the federal vehicle.

Charles remained restrained in another car.

Reed coordinated the search from the front seat.

Mara finally broke the silence.

“Rebecca contacted me six years ago.”

Daniel looked through the window.

“You told me you watched me because you wanted to know your father.”

“That was true.”

“It wasn’t the whole truth.”

“No.”

Rebecca had discovered that Daniel’s old Prague identification had been accessed through a dormant Meridian system.

She feared the Correction conditioning might reactivate.

She asked Mara to watch him from a distance.

Mara agreed before knowing Rebecca was her mother.

“She told me your name was Daniel Cross,” Mara said. “She said you were dangerous when certain memories returned.”

“So every Thursday morning was an evaluation.”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Mara looked at him.

“Later, I wanted coffee with my father.”

The answer hurt more than Daniel expected.

“Why didn’t you tell me after Black Harbor?”

“Because Rebecca asked me not to.”

“She is walking into a facility that may require her death.”

“I know.”

“And you still think protecting her secrets matters?”

“No.”

Mara held up her wrist.

The hidden black implant had begun forming the twelve-section symbol again.

“When Lucien opened the Red Archive, this received a command.”

“What command?”

Mara did not answer.

Emily understood.

“That is why you almost shot Dad.”

“That was one command.”

“There was another?”

Mara looked toward Daniel.

“WHEN THE CORRECTION REMEMBERS, TERMINATE HIM.”

Reed glanced back.

“Who sent it?”

“No signature.”

Daniel reached for Mara’s wrist.

“Can you control it?”

“I did before.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No,” Mara said. “I don’t know if I can control it again.”

The convoy reached the lake shortly before sunrise.

Rebecca’s signal ended in the center of the water.

No boats were visible.

No buildings stood nearby.

Charles was brought from the second vehicle.

He looked at the lake.

“Room Zero was built beneath water so no external signal could reach it.”

“How do we enter?” Reed asked.

Charles pointed toward an abandoned boathouse.

Inside, they found an elevator hidden beneath a fishing platform.

The black key opened the controls.

Before Daniel entered, Mara grabbed his arm.

“There is something else.”

He waited.

“The message sent at 2:13 p.m. three months ago did not come from the satellite phone.”

“What message?”

“The first command I received after Black Harbor.”

She showed him a recovered file.

PROTECT THE FAMILY UNTIL THE CORRECTION ACTIVATES.

“Who sent it?”

Mara enlarged the biometric signature.

The command had been authenticated by Daniel himself.

“That’s impossible.”

“It was recorded thirty-five years ago.”

Seven-year-old Daniel had somehow created a future command.

Reed checked the elevator shaft.

“We need to move.”

The platform descended beneath the lake.

Water pressed against the glass walls.

Dark shapes moved beyond the lights.

Halfway down, Mara’s implant activated.

She screamed and fell against the wall.

Her hand reached for her weapon.

Daniel caught her wrist.

“Fight it.”

“I am.”

The elevator stopped.

A red light appeared above the doors.

CORRECTION MEMORY RECOVERY: 12%

Mara’s weapon fired.

The bullet struck the glass behind Daniel.

A crack spread through the elevator wall.

Water began leaking inside.

Mara dropped the gun.

“I didn’t aim at you.”

Daniel looked at the bullet hole.

She had aimed at the emergency control.

The damaged mechanism released the elevator.

They descended again.

When the doors opened, a woman waited on the other side.

Eleanor Vale.

She looked at Mara.

“The Gatekeeper finally came home.”

Daniel raised his weapon.

“Where is Rebecca?”

Eleanor stepped aside.

Rebecca stood inside a medical chamber.

A machine surrounded her body.

She was conscious.

Beside her monitor appeared two possible outcomes.

PRIMARY VESSEL TERMINATION.

Or:

TRANSFER TO COMPATIBLE HEIR.

May you like

The machine had already selected the compatible heir.

MARA MERCER.
