CHAPTER 30 : 2:13 AGAIN

Daniel’s street was empty when the federal vehicles arrived.

No black vehicle waited across the road.

No lights burned inside the neighboring houses.

The power had failed across the entire block.

Reed ordered tactical teams to surround the property.

Daniel refused to remain outside.

“My son is in there.”

“You have never met him,” Reed said.

“That doesn’t change what he is.”

“It may change what he wants.”

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

She had barely spoken since leaving the lake.

“What does Elias want?”

“I don’t know.”

“You knew his name.”

“I held him for less than one minute.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“He never cried. He opened his eyes and looked directly at me. Then the doctors took him.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I believed you were dead.”

“And after I returned?”

“They told me the child had been buried.”

Rebecca looked toward the house.

“I did not know he was alive until I saw the Room Zero file three months ago.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You knew before the lake?”

“I suspected.”

“You kept another secret.”

“I was afraid you would search for him.”

“He is our son.”

“He was raised to control you.”

Rebecca’s voice hardened.

“I was afraid he would use that.”

Mara checked the front entrance.

“No explosives.”

Emily examined the security panel.

“The house recognizes all of us.”

The door opened before anyone touched it.

Inside, the kitchen looked exactly as it had before the attack.

The broken windows had been replaced.

The overturned furniture stood upright.

A mug of black coffee rested beside the sink.

Steam still rose from it.

The kitchen clock showed 2:12 p.m.

Daniel’s satellite case sat on the table.

He had been carrying it when they left Room Zero.

Yet another identical case waited inside the house.

The clock changed.

2:13 p.m.

Every door locked.

Metal shutters covered the windows.

Reed’s tactical team disappeared from the exterior cameras.

The satellite phone began ringing.

Daniel answered.

Elias’s voice came through without distortion.

“You always arrive one minute late.”

“Show yourself.”

“You first.”

“I’m standing in my kitchen.”

“No. Daniel Mercer is standing in the kitchen.”

The lights dimmed.

“You are still hiding from Daniel Cross.”

“I’m not the Correction.”

“You killed four Houses before you were thirty.”

“I was used.”

“So was I.”

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Where are you?”

“Home.”

The call ended.

A floorboard moved behind the kitchen table.

Mara pulled it open.

Inside was a metal box containing photographs.

Daniel and Rebecca in Prague.

Emily as a newborn.

Mara at twelve.

Elias at every age.

The final photograph showed all four family members entering the house seconds earlier.

A fifth person stood behind them.

A young man with pale silver eyes.

Emily turned.

The hallway was empty.

Mara’s implant burned beneath her skin.

She pressed a hand against her wrist.

“He is using the house wiring to transmit commands.”

“What command?” Daniel asked.

Mara looked frightened.

“Open Gate One.”

The living room wall separated.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Daniel had lived in the house for nineteen years.

He had never known it existed.

Rebecca stared at the opening.

“Vivian built this house.”

Daniel remembered the surveillance devices installed eight years earlier.

Perhaps the house had never truly belonged to him.

They descended.

The underground chamber was smaller than Room Zero.

Eleven photographs covered the walls.

One for each surviving House.

House Vale’s photograph had turned gray.

Whitmore’s was already gray.

Nine remained active.

At the center stood a thirteenth photograph.

The Mercer family.

A black circle surrounded their faces.

But this circle contained thirteen sections.

Not twelve.

The satellite phone displayed a countdown.

24:00:00.

23:59:59.

23:59:58.

Emily read the message beneath it.

SUCCESSION BEGINS WHEN THE THIRTEENTH HOUSE IS COMPLETE.

Footsteps came from the stairs.

A young man entered.

He appeared to be in his late twenties.

Dark hair.

Pale silver eyes.

A scar crossed the right side of his neck.

Daniel recognized Rebecca’s mouth.

His own expression.

Mara raised her weapon.

The man did not react.

Rebecca whispered his name.

“Elias.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

“Hello, Mother.”

Then he turned toward Daniel.

“Hello, Dad.”

Daniel stepped between Elias and his daughters.

“You were watching the house.”

“I was protecting it.”

“You sent the attackers.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Elias looked toward Mara.

“The person who activated the Gatekeeper.”

Mara’s implant illuminated.

She dropped her weapon.

Her entire body stiffened.

Emily caught her before she fell.

A woman’s voice came through the chamber speakers.

Eleanor Vale.

She was alive.

“Elias has opened the first gate.”

The nine remaining family photographs began flashing.

One photograph enlarged.

House Hale.

Celia Hale stood inside the Old Meridian Stock Exchange.

Behind her were hundreds of restrained people connected to biometric machines.

Eleanor continued.

“If Hale falls, the global communication network falls with it.”

Another image appeared.

Charles stood beside Celia.

He was no longer restrained.

He wore the black Whitmore ring.

Emily’s face hardened.

“He chose them.”

Elias shook his head.

“No. Charles is doing what I asked.”

“What did you ask him to do?” Daniel demanded.

“Begin the correction.”

The countdown continued.

23:56:41.

23:56:40.

The chamber doors opened behind Elias.

A group of armed agents waited in the tunnel.

Each carried an official federal badge.

Reed’s badge.

Mara regained control of her body long enough to whisper:

“Dad, those are Reed’s people.”

Daniel looked at the badges.

Then at the security monitor.

Chief Reed stood outside the house, shouting orders at tactical teams that could no longer hear him.

There were two federal operations.

One outside.

One beneath the house.

Elias held out his hand to Daniel.

“You have spent your life searching for another option.”

“What are you offering?”

“The truth.”

“Whose truth?”

Elias glanced toward the nine remaining Houses.

“Ours.”

Rebecca stepped beside Daniel.

Emily supported Mara.

The family stood together between the armed agents and the underground gate.

Daniel did not take Elias’s hand.

Elias smiled faintly.

“You were never hunting Meridian, Dad.”

The thirteenth section of the circle turned red.

“You were rebuilding it.”

Above them, the kitchen clock stopped at exactly 2:13 p.m.

Across the country, nine hidden facilities opened simultaneously.

And inside each one, someone whispered the same command.

May you like

“Release the heirs.”
