CHAPTER 14 — THE NAMES IN THE LEDGER

Charles had survived the fall from the platform.

Vivian had not.

He had climbed through a maintenance shaft and reached Evelyn before the family escaped the command room.

Now he stood aboard her boat with Rebecca as his shield.

Evelyn accelerated toward the mainland.

Mara seized a floating emergency raft.

Daniel and Emily pulled Anna aboard.

The raft’s engine coughed before starting.

They pursued the boat through burning wreckage.

Chief Reed sat near the stern, his wrists tied.

Charles pressed his gun against Rebecca’s back.

Daniel shouted across the water.

“Let her go!”

Charles turned.

“You keep asking me to surrender the only things keeping me alive.”

“The ledger has been released.”

“Not all of it.”

He raised the red folder.

“The original contains names Mara never uploaded.”

Mara heard him.

“The Black Annex.”

Anna’s face changed.

“What is that?” Emily asked.

“The names of people above the Whitmore family,” Anna replied.

“Above them?”

“The families, agencies, and private groups that used the Whitmores as intermediaries.”

The verified Omega Ledger exposed corruption.

The Black Annex exposed the architects.

Evelyn wanted it.

Charles wanted to bargain with it.

Rebecca was the only person who knew how to authenticate it.

The chase continued toward a dark section of coastline known as Black Harbor.

An abandoned communications bunker stood among the rocks.

Evelyn’s boat entered a hidden inlet.

By the time Daniel’s raft arrived, they were gone.

Mara found blood on the dock.

Rebecca’s.

They entered the bunker.

Old computer servers hummed behind reinforced walls.

The facility had not been abandoned.

It had been waiting.

Screens displayed news reports from across the country.

Police chiefs were being arrested.

Judges were placed under investigation.

Whitmore bank accounts had been frozen.

Guests from the Fourth of July party were giving statements.

Videos from Emily’s phone recording had appeared online.

Charles’s voice played repeatedly.

“My family built this town.”

The world was finally seeing the man he truly was.

But Evelyn still had the Black Annex.

Daniel followed the sound of voices into the central control room.

Charles stood beside Rebecca.

Evelyn held the red folder.

Chief Reed was chained to a pipe.

“You lost,” Daniel said.

Evelyn smiled.

“I lost one network.”

She gestured toward the servers.

“This facility connects to eleven others.”

Cross Seven had never been unique.

It was one branch of a much larger structure.

Mara raised her weapon.

“Release them.”

Evelyn looked at her former student.

“You could have led all of this.”

“You stole my life.”

“I gave you purpose.”

“You gave me targets.”

Charles suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned toward him.

“You still believe Evelyn is in control?”

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

Charles held a small detonator.

“I copied the Black Annex before giving her the folder.”

“You don’t understand what is inside it,” Evelyn said.

“I understand leverage.”

Charles looked at Emily.

“When I married you, I believed the Whitmore name was power. Your father taught me something better.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What?”

“Power belongs to whoever is willing to destroy everything.”

Charles pressed the detonator.

Steel doors sealed throughout the bunker.

A countdown appeared.

REMOTE RELEASE: 03:00

Mara checked the servers.

“He’s uploading the unverified Black Annex.”

Emily looked at the names flashing across the screen.

Some could be criminals.

Others could be innocent people placed there as revenge.

If released without verification, it would create chaos.

Careers would be destroyed.

Witnesses could be killed.

Governments might fall on fabricated evidence.

Charles backed toward the exit tunnel.

“Stop the upload or follow me. You cannot do both.”

Daniel aimed at him.

Charles placed the detonator against Rebecca’s chest.

“If my heartbeat stops, the release completes immediately.”

Rebecca looked at Daniel.

“Let him take me.”

“No.”

“Daniel, the names matter.”

“You matter.”

For sixteen years, he had believed she was dead.

He would not choose the world over her again.

Emily moved toward the servers.

“I’ll stop the upload.”

Mara joined her.

Anna accessed a second terminal.

Daniel pursued Charles into the tunnel.

Evelyn raised her gun behind him.

Chief Reed threw himself sideways, pulling the chain from the pipe.

The broken pipe struck Evelyn’s wrist.

Her shot missed Daniel.

Reed tackled her.

“Go!” he shouted.

Daniel followed Charles deeper into the bunker.

Behind him, the upload reached forty percent.

Charles entered a circular room overlooking the sea.

There was no second exit.

He had trapped himself.

Daniel lowered his rifle.

“It’s over.”

Charles smiled.

“No. It’s finally honest.”

He released Rebecca and handed her the detonator.

Daniel stared at him.

Charles stepped backward.

Rebecca raised the device.

Her hand was trembling.

“Daniel…”

“What are you doing?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Charles is not controlling the upload.”

Daniel looked toward the bunker.

“Then who is?”

Rebecca turned the detonator around.

The device was not connected to Charles’s heartbeat.

It was connected to hers.

May you like

She whispered the name Daniel never expected to hear.

“Emily.”
