CHAPTER 19 THE VALE WARNING

Rebecca could not look away from the monitor.
In the future recording, Daniel raised the termination device toward her chest.
The image flickered before revealing a timer.
JULY 27
2:13 P.M.
Seven days.
The screen went dark.
Mara examined the equipment.
“This isn’t a prediction.”
“Then what is it?” Emily asked.
“A scenario.”
Mara unplugged the monitor.
“Someone created it to influence our decisions.”
Daniel looked at the blood covering the chair.
“Or to prepare us for what they intend to make happen.”
Nicholas Vale refused to leave the panic room until Daniel showed him the black Skeleton Key.
The boy stared at it for several seconds.
“My father gave that to my mother.”
“We found it upstairs.”
“Then she escaped.”
Daniel crouched in front of him.
“Where would she go?”
Nicholas hesitated.
“She told me never to say.”
“Your family is being hunted.”
“So is yours.”
Daniel held his gaze.
“Then help me keep both alive.”
Nicholas finally reached beneath the emergency blanket and removed a small silver coin.
A circle divided into twelve sections was engraved on one side.
On the other was a geographic coordinate.
Mara entered it into her phone.
The location was an abandoned train station outside Washington.
A gunshot broke the silence above them.
Daniel drew his weapon.
Reed’s voice came through the radio.
“Daniel, identify yourself.”
“Kitchen level.”
“Federal teams are finally inside. The property’s signal barrier dropped two minutes ago.”
Daniel looked at Mara.
Someone had deliberately allowed the government to enter only after they discovered Nicholas.
Reed placed the boy under direct protection.
Daniel insisted that no one connected to Vale medical services be allowed near him.
They reached the abandoned train station shortly before dawn.
Jonas Vale sat alone on a bench.
He wore a dark suit stained with blood.
The left side of his face looked almost identical to the corpse at the estate.
Almost.
“You used a double,” Daniel said.
Jonas smiled weakly.
“We all use doubles.”
“Your wife?”
“Missing.”
“Your children?”
“Nicholas is my only biological child.”
Daniel thought of the dead teenage girl.
“The others were trained stand-ins?”
“Not trained. Manufactured.”
Rebecca stiffened.
Jonas saw her reaction.
“Not in the way you’re imagining. Children without families were given our names, education, and appearances. They became public versions of us.”
“You stole children,” Emily said.
“My father did.”
“And you allowed it.”
Jonas did not defend himself.
“The Council demanded separation between our private and public identities. Some families obeyed willingly. Others learned the consequences of refusing.”
Daniel placed the childhood medical file on the bench.
“Why was I in your facility?”
“Because you were selected as the Correction.”
“The attacker called me the original source.”
“The two titles refer to the same person.”
Jonas’s breathing became shallow.
“The eleven Houses built Meridian. But they knew any one House might become too powerful. So they created a twelfth position with no family loyalty.”
Daniel understood.
“A weapon.”
“A judge.”
“A killer.”
Jonas looked into his eyes.
“You were trained to eliminate compromised Houses.”
“I was seven.”
“You were trained for years. Then someone removed you before your conditioning was complete.”
“Who?”
“Vivian.”
Emily’s grandmother.
The woman who had secretly dismantled parts of the Whitmore authority before her death.
Jonas continued.
“Vivian believed the Correction could become human if he was given a real family.”
Daniel glanced at Rebecca, Emily, and Mara.
“Was my family an experiment?”
“It became one.”
Rebecca stepped closer.
“What is Room Zero?”
“The Meridian command center. It contains the original records, succession protocols, and biological controls connecting every House.”
“Where?”
“No one knows until the Skeleton Key activates all twelve routes.”
“We only have one key.”
“You have more than that.”
Jonas looked at Rebecca’s chest.
“You carry the first living route.”
Rebecca’s implant pulsed.
Jonas coughed.
Blood touched his lips.
Mara scanned the rooftops.
“Sniper.”
The shot struck Jonas before she finished speaking.
Daniel dragged him behind the concrete bench.
A second bullet shattered the station clock.
Mara fired toward a maintenance tower while Emily called Reed.
Jonas gripped Daniel’s jacket.
“Calder is moving first.”
“Where?”
“Saint Arden.”
“What is Saint Arden?”
“The hospital where Rebecca’s implant was created.”
His fingers tightened.
“Don’t let them reach the children.”
“What children?”
Jonas’s eyes moved toward Rebecca.
“The bridges.”
His hand fell.
Daniel checked his pulse.
Nothing.
The station loudspeakers activated.
A woman’s voice filled the abandoned platform.
“House Vale has been terminated.”
One section of the twelve-part symbol illuminated above the station clock.

Then another message appeared.
TEN HOUSES REMAIN.
