CHAPTER 20 THE TWELVE GATES

The Skeleton Key contained no electronic components.
Yet when Reed placed it inside a secure federal scanner, the machine shut down.
Every screen in the room displayed the twelve-section circle.
One by one, names appeared.
VALE — MEDICAL RELOCATION
HALE — DATA AND COMMUNICATION
CALDER — DEFENSE
MORROW — FINANCE
ARDEN — PHARMACEUTICALS
BISHOP — RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS
SOREN — ENERGY
LOCKE — TRANSPORTATION
VOSS — MEDIA
DRAKE — DIPLOMATIC NETWORKS
WHITMORE — INTELLIGENCE OPERATIONS
Eleven Houses.
The twelfth section contained no family name.
It displayed only one word.
CORRECTION.
Daniel stared at it.
His photograph appeared beneath the title.
The image had been taken when he was seven years old.
A second image showed him at sixteen.
A third showed him in Prague.
A fourth showed him standing beside Rebecca beneath the maple tree three days earlier.
They had documented his entire life.
Reed leaned against the conference table.
“You were working for them in Prague?”
“I worked for an intelligence unit that officially did not exist.”
“Did you know it belonged to Meridian?”
“No.”
Mara looked at the twelve sectors.
“Every mission you completed may have protected one House by weakening another.”
Daniel remembered assassinations, extractions, and operations that had never made sense.
Targets described as terrorists who had no ideological connections.
Accountants.
Doctors.
Lawyers.
Family members.
He had believed he was stopping threats.
Perhaps he had only been settling internal disputes.
Emily touched the Whitmore section.
It was gray.
“What happens when a House is terminated?”
A document opened.
All accounts, identities, assets, biological records, and protected personnel connected to the House would be transferred to the remaining members.
The destruction of one House strengthened the others.
“The Vale family wasn’t attacked because they were weak,” Emily said. “They were harvested.”
Rebecca’s implant pulsed again.
This time she nearly collapsed.
Daniel caught her.
A map appeared on the screen.
Saint Arden Children’s Hospital.
Reed immediately contacted federal headquarters.
Before he could issue an order, his phone rang.
His expression changed as he listened.
“What happened?” Daniel asked.
Reed lowered the phone.
“The transport carrying Charles Whitmore was attacked.”
Emily went still.
“Is he dead?”
“Missing.”
“Who attacked it?”
“The escort team.”
Charles had spent his entire life inside the Whitmore network.
He knew names, codes, and hidden routes.
Someone had extracted him before he could testify.
Daniel looked at the Saint Arden map.
“It’s a diversion.”
“Maybe,” Mara said. “But Rebecca’s implant is responding to that hospital.”
Saint Arden Children’s Hospital appeared ordinary from the outside.
Painted animals covered the lobby walls.
Volunteers handed toys to sick children.
Doctors moved through the corridors carrying tablets and coffee.
The basement did not appear on official building plans.
The Skeleton Key opened the service elevator.
Below the hospital, Daniel found thirty-one children sleeping inside glass medical rooms.
Each child wore a biometric monitor.
Thin wires connected their heartbeats to a central system.
Rebecca approached the first room.
A girl opened her eyes.
She could not have been older than nine.
When she saw Rebecca, she sat up.
“Mother Twelve.”
Rebecca stopped breathing.
Daniel opened the door.
“Why did you call her that?”
The girl pointed toward Rebecca’s chest.
“Her heart tells us when to wake up.”
Across the facility, the other children opened their eyes.
Thirty-one monitors began matching Rebecca’s heartbeat.
One beat.
Pause.
One beat.
Pause.
Rebecca pressed a hand against her chest.
“I can feel them.”
An alarm sounded.
The facility began deleting its records.
Emily and Mara rushed toward the central servers.
Daniel disconnected the first child.
The girl grabbed his wrist.
“You shouldn’t have come.”
“Why?”
“The man said you would open the door.”
“What door?”
A steel barrier at the far end of the basement unlocked.
Charles Whitmore stood on the other side.
Blood covered his shirt.
A black symbol had been burned into his neck.
He looked at Emily.
“I told them you would follow your mother.”
Emily raised her weapon.
Charles smiled.
“Now all the heirs are exactly where Meridian needs them.”
May you like
The steel doors slammed shut behind him.
Gas began entering the children’s rooms.
