CHAPTER 19 : The Man Who Had Been Missing

The abandoned subway entrance led beneath the oldest section of the city.

Mara ordered Daniel and Maya to remain aboveground.

Neither listened.

The three of them descended a rusted staircase while tactical agents searched ahead.

Water dripped from cracked concrete.

Old transit maps peeled from the walls.

Daniel carried the photograph of Thomas, Henry, and Gideon inside his coat.

Maya walked beside him.

“What was my father investigating?” she asked.

“I don’t know yet.”

“You knew Thomas Mercer.”

“He was my father.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Daniel looked at her.

Maya’s expression was controlled, but anger tightened her jaw.

People had told her to be patient for eighteen months.

People had promised to call.

People had misplaced reports, transferred detectives, and suggested that Henry might have left voluntarily.

She was finished accepting careful answers.

Daniel understood.

“My father investigated systems that used courts and medical authority to take control of people’s lives,” he said. “Hartwell was part of that system.”

“Part?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

They reached an abandoned platform.

A maintenance light flashed at the far end.

Someone sat on a bench beneath it.

Maya stopped breathing.

“Dad?”

Henry Nolan lifted his head.

He was thinner than the man in the security video.

Bruises marked both wrists.

Thomas’s ring hung from a cord around his neck.

Maya ran toward him.

Mara caught her arm.

“Wait.”

Henry looked at his daughter.

His face showed recognition.

Then fear.

“Maya.”

She pulled free and crossed the platform.

Henry stood slowly.

Maya wrapped her arms around him.

For one second, he held her.

Then he pushed her away.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“I’ve been looking for you.”

“I know.”

“Where have you been?”

Henry looked toward the tunnel.

“There isn’t time.”

Daniel approached.

Henry stared at him.

“You have Thomas’s eyes.”

“You knew my father?”

“He saved my life.”

“Why did you take his ring?”

“I didn’t take it.”

Henry pulled the cord from his neck.

“He gave it to me.”

Daniel did not move.

“My father died more than twenty years ago.”

Henry’s gaze hardened.

“I know when Thomas Mercer died.”

He placed the ring in Daniel’s palm.

“It wasn’t the date printed on his death certificate.”

Mara stepped closer.

“What is the Registry?”

Henry’s fear deepened.

“Hartwell was not the organization.”

“What was it?”

“The intake system.”

A metallic sound came from the tunnel.

Henry turned.

“Down!”

The platform lights exploded.

Darkness swallowed them.

Daniel heard Maya scream.

Boots struck the concrete.

Mara fired once toward the tunnel.

A flash grenade rolled across the platform.

Daniel covered his eyes as the blast shook the station.

When he could see again, two agents were unconscious.

Mara was on one knee.

Maya lay beside the bench, coughing.

Henry was gone.

A black maintenance train disappeared into the tunnel.

Daniel ran after it, but the tracks vanished into darkness.

“Dad!” Maya screamed.

Her voice followed the train until the sound of its engine faded.

Mara found a small object beneath the bench.

An old microcassette recorder.

There was blood on one corner.

Maya pressed the play button.

Static filled the platform.

Then Thomas Mercer’s voice emerged.

“If Henry has found Daniel, the Registry has already reopened.”

Daniel went still.

He had listened to every known recording his father had ever made.

He knew the voice.

It was Thomas.

The recording continued.

“Do not take this evidence to the federal task force.”

Mara looked at Daniel.

Thomas spoke again.

“One of them belongs to Gideon.”

A loud click ended the message.

Mara’s radio activated.

“Agent Quinn, Director Hale wants the Mercer family detained for immediate questioning.”

Mara stared at the device.

Director Adrian Hale was the man overseeing the federal investigation.

He was also the official who had personally selected Mara for the case.

Daniel closed his hand around Thomas’s ring.

Above them, the abandoned station doors slammed shut.

Someone had locked them underground.
