CHAPTER 29 The Building That Remembered

The old Reed International headquarters rose above the financial district like a dark monument.

Most windows had been removed.

Construction barriers surrounded the lower floors.

Daniel, Victoria, Grace, Mara, Maya, and Eleanor entered through the underground parking garage.

Eleanor refused to remain behind.

“This began before Daniel was old enough to understand it,” she said. “I will not send him inside alone.”

The elevator system had no power.

They climbed thirty-two floors.

Eleanor used her cane but never asked them to slow down.

Her former office had been stripped to concrete.

The wall behind her desk was marked for demolition.

She placed her hand against it.

“Thomas installed a private elevator here.”

Mara found a hidden biometric panel.

It accepted Eleanor’s fingerprint.

The wall opened.

A narrow elevator descended beneath the building.

The Registry room remained intact.

Rows of screens activated when Eleanor entered.

Names appeared.

Thousands of them.

Some were former witnesses.

Some were Hartwell victims.

Some were federal employees.

Some were children.

A timer appeared above the database.

DEMOLITION PURGE: 00:41:18.

Maya searched for Henry.

His location appeared on the lowest level.

Victoria searched for Rebecca Lane.

Three results appeared.

REBECCA MERCER — DECEASED.

REBECCA LANE — DECEASED.

REBECCA SHAW — ACTIVE CUSTODIAN ACCESS.

Eleanor stared at the screen.

“Gideon’s wife.”

Mara checked the profile photograph.

The woman was the same person who had left Victoria’s apartment.

Rebecca Shaw and Victoria’s mother were listed as a single biometric identity.

“But the pregnant woman in the video was called Rebecca,” Daniel said.

Eleanor looked toward Victoria.

“She may have used all three names.”

“Was she carrying Thomas’s child?”

“I still don’t know.”

A door opened at the end of the room.

Henry Nolan appeared.

Maya ran toward him.

This time, he did not push her away.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

“Where is Rebecca?”

“Below us.”

“What is she doing?”

“Waiting for Eleanor.”

Henry explained that Thomas had created the hidden room as a control center.

After Gideon corrupted the Registry, Thomas attempted to preserve evidence.

Rebecca took control of the system after the fire.

For decades, she had remained invisible while training others to manage separate branches.

Malcolm.

Olivia.

Hale.

Dr. Rowan.

None had controlled the full network.

They had only controlled pieces.

“Is Rebecca the Custodian?” Daniel asked.

Henry looked at Victoria.

“She was.”

“Was?”

“She chose a successor.”

Victoria stepped back.

“No.”

Henry’s eyes filled with regret.

“The Registry has followed you since childhood.”

“I never worked for them.”

“You didn’t need to.”

He pointed toward the screens.

“They shaped every environment around you. Your schools. Your father’s businesses. Your relationship with Daniel.”

Victoria looked at Eleanor.

“The wedding.”

Henry nodded.

“Your marriage to Daniel was not an accident.”

Victoria’s face hardened.

“I chose him.”

“Yes.”

“And he chose me.”

“Yes.”

Henry did not take that away from them.

“But someone made sure you met.”

The demolition timer reached thirty-two minutes.

A second countdown appeared beneath it.

SUCCESSION TRANSFER: 00:32:00.

The listed recipient was Victoria Lane.

Victoria backed away from the screen.

“I don’t accept it.”

“The transfer doesn’t require consent,” Henry said.

“What does it require?”

“Public isolation. Loss of family trust. Criminal suspicion. Emotional destabilization.”

Daniel understood.

Every leak had been designed to separate Victoria from the people who might believe her.

Her past made her the perfect replacement.

If she denied involvement, people would assume she was lying.

If she disappeared, people would assume she had run.

A security video appeared.

Grace and Henry were shown entering the building with Victoria earlier that evening.

The footage was false.

But it was already being transmitted to police.

Mara checked her phone.

“Every law-enforcement agency in the city just received an alert.”

“For whom?” Daniel asked.

She looked at Victoria.

“Victoria is wanted for kidnapping Henry Nolan and operating the Registry.”

Victoria stared at the countdown.

“What happens when it reaches zero?”

Henry answered.

“Legally, every Registry company, account, facility, and protected identity transfers to you.”

“And if I’m arrested?”

“Then the government will recognize you as the leader.”

The building shook.

Demolition charges had begun activating early.

A woman’s voice came through the speakers.

“Come downstairs, Victoria.”

Victoria recognized it.

She had not heard the voice since she was eight years old.

Her mother spoke again.

“It is time to inherit what I built for you.”
