CHAPTER 24 :The Man Who Never Aged

Mara drove an ambulance through Saint Orison’s rear gate.

She had intercepted Daniel’s failed call and tracked his phone.

Grace, Henry, Naomi, and Daniel escaped through the loading bay while facility employees attempted to move residents into unmarked buses.

Mara blocked the first bus with the ambulance.

Local police arrived six minutes later.

By then, Dr. Rowan had disappeared.

So had the records from the lower level.

Director Hale denied being present at Saint Orison.

He claimed the press-conference footage had been manipulated.

He also stated that Mara Quinn was under investigation for unauthorized activity.

Daniel showed Eleanor the photograph from Peter’s ledger.

She studied Hale’s face.

“That isn’t Adrian Hale.”

“Who is it?”

“His father.”

“They look identical.”

“Jonas Hale worked with Gideon.”

“What happened to him?”

“He died before the Registry fire.”

Daniel placed a recent photograph of Director Adrian Hale beside the old one.

The resemblance was exact.

Even the scar above the right eyebrow was the same.

Mara ran a private facial analysis.

The system returned a ninety-nine-point-seven percent match.

Either Adrian Hale was the man in the photograph—

Or someone had built his identity around Jonas Hale’s face.

Henry provided the explanation.

“Adrian was Jonas’s son,” he said. “When Jonas died, Gideon trained the boy to replace him.”

Daniel looked at him.

“A child cannot replace a federal official.”

“Not immediately.”

Henry sat in a protected hospital room with Maya beside him.

“Gideon believed identities were positions, not people. He collected school records, medical histories, signatures, photographs, and personal memories.”

“Why?”

“So someone else could step into the life later.”

Maya stared at her father.

“You knew all of this and never told me?”

“I thought distance would protect you.”

“It didn’t.”

“No.”

Henry accepted the accusation.

“I failed you.”

Daniel understood the sentence.

It was the same truth Eleanor had been forced to face.

Love did not make secrecy harmless.

Henry continued.

“Adrian Hale was raised to become the public version of his father. Same education. Same habits. Same political contacts.”

“Why would the government accept it?”

“They didn’t know.”

Mara leaned against the wall.

“Jonas Hale worked in federal records management before digital databases. If Gideon altered the paper trail early enough, Adrian’s entire life would appear legitimate.”

Daniel opened Peter’s ledger again.

“What did Peter discover?”

“That the Registry was replacing people in positions of influence.”

Grace stood near the window.

“My husband was a county auditor.”

“He found property transfers connected to officials who suddenly changed policies, withdrew investigations, or approved contracts.”

“Were those officials replaced?”

“Some were controlled through family members.”

Henry looked toward Mara.

“Others were removed.”

The hospital door opened.

Eleanor entered with Victoria.

Victoria carried a folder recovered from Naomi’s office.

Inside was a list of twelve federal employees.

Mara’s name appeared sixth.

Beside it was a code.

SUCCESSOR IDENTIFIED.

Mara read the words twice.

“What does that mean?”

Henry answered.

“They’ve chosen someone to replace you.”

Mara’s phone rang.

The caller identification showed her own number.

She answered.

A woman spoke.

Her voice was identical to Mara’s.

“Agent Quinn, you have been ordered to return to headquarters.”

Mara’s face hardened.

“Who is this?”

The woman laughed softly.

“You are.”

The call ended.

A nurse entered moments later.

She looked at Mara.

“Agent Quinn?”

“Yes?”

“There are federal officers downstairs.”

Mara reached for her weapon.

“How many?”

“Six.”

The nurse hesitated.

“They’re asking us to arrest the woman pretending to be you.”

Daniel looked through the window.

Black vehicles surrounded the hospital.

An agent stepped from the first SUV.

She had Mara’s height.

Mara’s hair.

Mara’s face.

May you like

The woman looked directly up at the hospital window.

Then she smiled.
