CHAPTER 27 : Eleanor’s First Confession

Hale did not attempt to arrest them.

He placed Peter’s ledger on the floor and stepped away.

“Page ninety-two,” he said.

Daniel opened it.

The page contained the original Registry charter.

Three signatures appeared at the bottom.

Thomas Mercer.

Gideon Shaw.

Eleanor Reed.

Hale looked at Victoria.

“Your voice opened the archive because Olivia made you part of the system.”

Then he looked at Mara.

“Your replacement is already working.”

Finally, he faced Daniel.

“And your sister is alive.”

“Where is she?”

Hale smiled without warmth.

“The Custodian asked me to give you a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Protect Eleanor’s reputation or learn what happened to Rebecca.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

Mara blocked his path.

Hale walked back up the staircase.

No one followed.

He had given them exactly what he wanted them to find.

Questions.

Suspicion.

A fracture inside the family.

Eleanor watched the courthouse video before sunrise.

She did not deny signing the charter.

Forty-two years earlier, Thomas and Eleanor had helped create a secret emergency network.

The official system had failed a group of witnesses connected to organized crime and political corruption.

Police addresses had been leaked.

Judges had returned children to violent homes.

A woman under guardianship had died after attempting to report financial exploitation.

“We believed secrecy was temporary,” Eleanor said.

“We created safe houses, replacement documents, and protected accounts.”

Daniel placed Rebecca’s bracelet on the table.

“And the pregnant woman?”

Eleanor stared at the name.

“I don’t remember her.”

“That is not enough.”

“I know.”

“Was Rebecca my father’s daughter?”

“I don’t know.”

“You were in the room.”

“I remember the meeting with Gideon.”

“Do you remember the woman?”

“No.”

“Do you remember the fire?”

Eleanor’s hands began to tremble.

“Only pieces.”

After the Registry fire, Eleanor had spent eleven days in a private hospital.

Thomas told Daniel she had been injured by smoke.

Medical records described head trauma, chemical exposure, and memory loss.

Thomas controlled access to her room.

Gideon was declared dead.

Rebecca Shaw was also listed among the dead.

The pregnant woman did not appear on any casualty report.

“What did you forget?” Daniel asked.

“I don’t know.”

“Did Dad make you forget?”

Pain crossed Eleanor’s face.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel turned away.

For years, Thomas’s ring had represented courage.

His letter had guided Daniel toward the truth.

Now every new answer revealed another decision Thomas had concealed.

Grace touched Daniel’s arm.

“Your father may have believed he was protecting someone.”

“That excuse has destroyed enough lives.”

Grace did not disagree.

Eleanor looked at Victoria.

“Why did Olivia choose you?”

Victoria hesitated.

“Because I hated you.”

“No. She had access to hundreds of angry people.”

Eleanor examined the list from Victoria’s office.

Conditionally useful.

A memory surfaced.

Not clearly.

A woman standing inside a hospital room.

A baby crying.

Thomas saying, “She cannot keep both names.”

Eleanor pressed one hand against her temple.

“What is it?” Daniel asked.

“I remember holding the baby.”

“Rebecca?”

“I think so.”

“What happened to her?”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I gave her to someone.”

“Who?”

“I can’t see her face.”

Victoria moved closer.

“Did the woman say anything?”

Eleanor’s breath caught.

One sentence had returned.

The woman taking the baby had leaned toward Eleanor and whispered:

One day, your son will marry mine.

Everyone looked at Victoria.

She stepped back.

“No.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Your mother died when you were young.”

“That’s what I was told.”

“Who told you?”

“My father.”

“What was your mother’s name?”

“Rebecca.”

Silence filled the room.

Victoria shook her head.

“Rebecca Lane.”

Eleanor looked at the medical bracelet again.

“What if Lane was not her first name?”

Victoria’s phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

MOTHER IS READY TO SEE YOU.

An address followed.

So did a photograph taken only seconds earlier.

It showed an elderly woman sitting inside Victoria’s apartment.

She held Thomas Mercer’s wedding ring in her hand.
