CHAPTER 30 The Choice Victoria Refused

The lower level could only be opened by Victoria’s voice.

She stood before the elevator.

Daniel remained beside her.

“You don’t have to go alone.”

“That may be exactly what she wants.”

“Then we disappoint her together.”

Victoria looked at him.

For years, she had wanted Daniel to choose her regardless of what she did.

Now she understood the difference between loyalty and blindness.

“Do not defend me if the evidence proves I was involved.”

“I won’t.”

“Do not believe me only because you once loved me.”

“I won’t.”

“Then why are you coming?”

“Because evidence also includes what I have watched you choose since prison.”

Victoria pressed the elevator button.

The doors opened.

Daniel, Victoria, Eleanor, and Mara descended.

Grace stayed above with Maya and Henry to stop the data purge.

The elevator opened into a circular room.

Rebecca Shaw sat behind a glass wall.

She appeared nearly eighty.

Her silver hair fell to her shoulders.

Her posture was straight.

Her eyes were Victoria’s.

“Mother,” Victoria said.

Rebecca smiled.

“You remember me.”

“I remember you dying.”

“A useful lesson.”

Rebecca looked at Eleanor.

“Hello, Ellie.”

Eleanor tightened both hands around her cane.

“I called you Rebecca Shaw.”

“You called me many things.”

“Were you Thomas’s daughter’s mother?”

Rebecca laughed softly.

“You still begin with the question that protects Thomas.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Was Rebecca Mercer my sister?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she?”

Rebecca looked at Victoria.

“Standing beside you.”

No one spoke.

Victoria’s expression did not change at first.

Then she shook her head.

“My name is Victoria Lane.”

“That was your third name.”

Daniel looked toward Eleanor.

The room seemed to tilt.

Rebecca continued.

“You were born Rebecca Mercer. Thomas was your father.”

Victoria stared through the glass.

“My father was Charles Lane.”

“Charles raised you.”

“Thomas Mercer was dead before I was born.”

“The official date is wrong.”

Daniel remembered Henry’s warning.

He knew when Thomas had died.

It was not the date on the certificate.

Rebecca placed one hand against the glass.

“Thomas survived the fire. He lived for almost four more years.”

Eleanor’s face became pale.

“No.”

“You visited him.”

“No.”

“You brought the child to me.”

“I don’t remember.”

“That was the point.”

Rebecca activated a screen.

Medical records appeared.

Eleanor Reed had received repeated treatments following the Registry fire.

Chemical memory suppression.

Hypnotic conditioning.

Controlled isolation.

The authorizing physician was Thomas Mercer.

Daniel stepped closer to the glass.

“My father erased her memory?”

Rebecca smiled sadly.

“Thomas erased everyone when truth became inconvenient.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor learned what he had done.”

“What did he do?”

Rebecca’s eyes moved toward Victoria.

“He created a child whose identity could control both families.”

Victoria struck the glass with her palm.

“I am not an account. I am not a successor. I am not something Thomas created to control anyone.”

“No,” Rebecca said.

“You became more difficult than he expected.”

A warning appeared on the wall.

SUCCESSION TRANSFER: 00:05:00.

Rebecca placed a document against the glass.

“If you sign a refusal, the Registry assets will be divided among its existing directors.”

“Hale and Rowan?”

“And others you have not met.”

“If I accept?”

“You control everything.”

Victoria looked at the names scrolling across the screens.

Facilities.

Accounts.

Hidden witnesses.

Stolen identities.

People trapped between legal lives.

She could shut parts of it down.

She could also become exactly what the world already believed she was.

Rebecca watched her.

“You spent years powerless inside prison. Take the system, Victoria. Use it better.”

Victoria remembered Eleanor’s words.

The moment someone calls control protection, ask who profits from your silence.

She picked up the refusal document.

Then she tore it in half.

Rebecca’s smile disappeared.

“That does not stop the transfer.”

“I know.”

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“Neither does accepting it.”

She took Thomas’s ring and pressed it into the emergency control panel.

The system recognized the original founder’s biometric token.

A third option appeared.

EXPOSE ALL RECORDS.

Rebecca stood abruptly.

“No.”

Victoria touched the screen.

Rebecca’s voice sharpened.

“You will expose protected victims along with criminals.”

Victoria stopped.

That was the trap.

Full exposure would destroy innocent lives.

Silence would preserve the Registry.

Control would make Victoria its new leader.

The countdown reached sixty seconds.

Daniel opened Peter Holloway’s ledger.

“Peter found another option.”

On the final page was a handwritten instruction.

TRANSFER TO THE FIRST SIGNATORY.

Eleanor Reed had signed the original charter first.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“If the system transfers to you, can you shut it down?”

Eleanor stared at the screen.

“I don’t know.”

Rebecca smiled again.

“She cannot.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor has inherited it once before.”

The countdown reached ten seconds.

Eleanor placed her hand on the scanner.

The room went dark.
