CHAPTER 31 : Thomas’s Hidden Room

The demolition countdown stopped.

The succession transfer disappeared.

For several seconds, no one moved.

Eleanor’s hand remained against the scanner.

“I was never the Custodian.”

Rebecca stood behind the glass.

“You founded the Registry.”

“I signed a charter.”

“You gave the first permanent-erasure order.”

“No.”

The system opened a directory marked ELEANOR REED — ADMINISTRATIVE HISTORY.

The earliest file was forty-two years old.

The latest had been accessed three weeks earlier.

The day the National Center for Guardianship Justice opened.

Someone had used Eleanor’s original credentials from inside the center.

Daniel looked at Rebecca.

“You used her identity.”

“Sometimes.”

“Who else?”

Rebecca glanced toward Mara.

“Ask your agent how many versions of herself are working tonight.”

Mara’s phone displayed reports from across the city.

The false Mara had ordered the arrest of Daniel, Eleanor, Victoria, Grace, Maya, and Henry.

Police units were entering the building.

Above them, Grace worked with Henry to interrupt the Registry database.

Maya discovered a hidden communication channel.

Someone inside the National Center was transmitting victim information to the old Reed headquarters.

Addresses.

Medical conditions.

Family contacts.

Every person who had requested help was being cataloged.

The center had not merely attracted survivors.

It had gathered them in one searchable system.

Grace called Daniel.

“The Registry used our intake forms.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Their promise to help everyone had created a map of everyone who could be targeted.

“Can you stop the transfer?”

“Not from here.”

Eleanor looked toward Rebecca.

“This was your plan.”

“No.”

For the first time, Rebecca appeared concerned.

“I intended to transfer control to Victoria.”

“Then who is downloading the center’s files?”

Rebecca examined her terminal.

Someone had entered the system under a name none of them recognized.

MERCER, THOMAS — ACTIVE.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“That is impossible.”

A hidden door opened behind Rebecca.

She turned.

The room beyond contained a narrow bed, medical equipment, and walls covered with photographs.

Daniel as a child.

Eleanor at the hospital.

Victoria at school.

The canceled wedding.

Olivia’s trial.

The center’s opening ceremony.

Someone had observed them for decades.

Rebecca entered the room.

Daniel broke the glass partition with a steel chair.

By the time they reached the other side, she was gone.

Only a fresh cup of coffee remained.

Victoria touched it.

“Warm.”

A tape recorder sat beside the bed.

Daniel pressed play.

Thomas’s voice filled the hidden room.

“Daniel, you will want to believe Rebecca is the enemy.”

The recording sounded recent.

Not young.

Not preserved from decades earlier.

Thomas’s voice was weak but unmistakable.

“That belief will be useful to the person who has been waiting for you to reach this room.”

Daniel looked toward the open doorway.

Thomas continued.

“The Registry did not survive because Gideon was powerful.”

A pause.

“It survived because someone inside our family never wanted it destroyed.”

Eleanor gripped her cane.

“Thomas?”

The tape continued.

“If Eleanor has remembered the first signature, do not let her authenticate the final file.”

Everyone turned toward the active screen.

Eleanor’s fingerprint had unlocked a folder.

FOUNDING SESSION 001.

Mara attempted to close it.

The system rejected her command.

A live camera feed appeared.

It showed the memorial room inside the National Center.

Grace and Maya were no longer there.

A person stood before Thomas’s letter.

The figure wore a dark coat.

Their face remained hidden.

The person removed the letter from the glass case.

Behind it was a door none of them had known existed.

The memorial wall opened.

Dozens of people stood inside the chamber beyond it.

Some were elderly.

Some were children.

All wore gray clothing from Saint Orison.

Henry’s voice came through Daniel’s phone.

“They moved the residents beneath the center.”

“How?”

“The old rail tunnel.”

Daniel understood too late.

The National Center had been built over the abandoned station.

The same tunnels used by the Registry.

The center was not only gathering victims’ information.

It was being prepared as a replacement facility.

The figure in the memorial room turned toward the camera.

Director Adrian Hale lowered his hood.

He held a detonator.

“If the Registry files are released,” Hale said, “the tunnel doors remain sealed.”

Daniel looked at the screen showing hundreds of names.

Expose the files, and the people beneath the center would die.

Preserve the files, and the Registry would survive.

Hale smiled.

“Your father designed better choices than this.”

He pressed one button.

The tunnel ventilation system shut down.

A countdown appeared.
