Chapter 1: The Slap in the Bakery

The biscuit was barely worth fifty cents.

But to the little boy standing outside the bakery window with his skinny brown dog, it looked like treasure.

Maya had seen them there three mornings in a row.

The boy never begged.

He only stood quietly beside the dog, watching the birthday cakes through the glass as if he was looking into a dream.

So when Maya found one small broken biscuit on the tray, she wrapped it in a napkin and stepped outside.

“Happy birthday, buddy,” she whispered to the dog.

The boy’s face lit up.

Then the bakery door flew open.

Mr. Danton, the owner, stormed out with rage burning in his eyes.

“Who authorized you to give my products away?”

Before Maya could answer, his hand struck her face.

The tray crashed to the sidewalk.

The boy screamed.

The dog backed away, trembling.

And everyone on the street stopped.
