Chapter 3: One Phone Call

Mr. Danton’s face changed immediately.
“Mrs. Whitmore,” he stammered. “This is a misunderstanding.”
Caroline looked at Maya’s red cheek.
Then at the crying boy.
Then at the scattered biscuits on the ground.
She raised her phone.
“Cancel the bakery’s lease review,” she said into the call. “Begin eviction proceedings today.”
Mr. Danton went pale.
“You can’t do that.”
Caroline’s eyes hardened.
“I can. And I should have done it months ago.”
The crowd began whispering.
Because everyone knew the bakery was famous.
But no one knew what happened behind its polished glass doors.
Maya did.
She knew about the unpaid overtime.
The expired ingredients hidden in the back.
