Chapter 6: Maya’s Bakery

Two weeks later, Caroline called Maya back to the same storefront.

Maya thought she was there to give a final statement.

Instead, Caroline handed her a key.

“This block needs a bakery,” Caroline said. “A kind one.”

Maya stared at her.

“I don’t have money to start a business.”

Caroline smiled.

“You have something better. You have a heart people trust.”

The new bakery was called Second Chance Sweets.

Former employees returned.

Fresh bread went to shelters every evening.

A small bowl of dog biscuits sat by the door with a handwritten sign:

For good dogs and the people who love them.

On opening day, Noah and Lucky were the first customers.

Maya brought out a tiny cake shaped like a bone.

Noah whispered, “He finally got his birthday.”
