Chapter 2: The Receipts in the Back Room

Maya pressed one hand to her burning cheek.

“I paid for it from my tips,” she said softly.

Mr. Danton ripped the white assistant apron from her shoulders.

“You’re fired. Get out of my bakery.”

The little boy hugged his dog tightly.

“She was just being nice,” he cried. “It’s my dog’s birthday.”

Mr. Danton looked down at him with disgust.

“Then teach your dog to buy something.”

That was the moment a black car stopped at the curb.

A woman in a tailored coat stepped out.

Her name was Caroline Whitmore.

Most people in the city knew her as a billionaire philanthropist.

But Mr. Danton knew something worse.

She owned the entire commercial block.
